Cross-Correlation Coefficient-Based Coherency Identification in Bulk Power System Using Wide-Area Measurements

Abstract:This paper presents a novel approach to identify the coherent generator groups in bulk power system using phasor measurement units (PMUs). For the coherent generators performing the same or similar dynamic trajectories in the disturbance, a cross-correlation approach is proposed to identify the dominant coherent groups and the sub dominant coherent groups in the bulk power system by referring to the coherent group identification in the model based on approaches using the direction cosine. In order to suppress the impact of measurement window on the accuracy of the identification, a practical robust criterion of coherency identification is also developed. With the developed criterion, the coherent generator groups are all identified accurately. The results of the two-area interconnected system and China Southern power Grid (CSG) validate the accuracy and validity of the proposed approach.
