Investigation on IGCT-Based on Large Power Five-Level Neutral-Point-Clamped/H-Bridge Converter

Abstract:With the combination of the three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) technology and H-bridge cascade technology, the five-level NPC/H-bridge converter can improve the output voltage and power capacity. In this paper, the topology of large power five-level NPC/H-bridge converter based on integrated gate-commutated thyristor (IGCT) was investigated, and the modular structure design was adopted to reduce the stray inductance. An improved phase disposition sinusoidal pulse width modulation (IPD-SPWM) method is used when the converter works at low and medium frequencies, and a method to solve the minimum pulse width problem with small modulation depth is proposed. The selective harmonic elimination pulse width modulation (SHEPWM) method is adopted to reduce the output voltage total harmonic distortion (THD) when the converter works at high frequency, and the trajectory curves of switch angles are given. The experimental results verify the feasibility of the topology design and pulse width modulation method proposed in this paper, and show that the converter meets the design requirements and has excellent performance.
