Abstract:To reduce the short-circuit current flowing through the thyristors of series-resonant type fault current limiter,a new type double-splitting iron reactor with two columns is introduced.The thyristors are connected in series with one limb of the reactor,and then in paralleled with the compensation capacitor.When the power system is in normal state,the iron reactor shows a large reactance,and thus low current flows through it.But as long as the short circuit occurs,the thyristors are turned on and the reactor shows a small leakage reactance.The fault current transfers from the capacitor to reactor quickly,and thus the resonant condition is destructed and then the fault current is limited.A prototype double-splitting iron reactor used in 400 V series-resonant type fault current limiter is designed and manufactured.Using the three-dimensional edge element method,the magnetic field and reactance parameters of the reactor are simulated.The results show that the reactance is 192 mH with single-branch and small current operation mode,and 151 μH with double-branches and large current operation mode.Through short circuit impact test,the reactor could transfer the fault current quickly and share the current uniformly,and the test results of reactance agree well with the simulation ones.In order to reduce the impulse current in thyristors,a method to adjust the leakage reactance for double-branches mode under the condition that the single-branch reactance keeps constant is presented,and the simulation result proves the effectiveness of this method.
