Space Charge Measurement on Cable Under AC Voltage

Abstract:A new kind of AC space charge measurement instrument is introduced in this paper. It can measure the space charge of XLPE cable under AC voltage with a new AC phase matching method. Two experiments are carried out to research the AC space charge characteristics of the cable.Firstly the XLPE cable after electrical-thermal aging for 90 days is polarized for 2 h, and secondly the cable used for 15 years is aged under temperature gradient for 384 h.The space charge profiles are measured simultaneously in the two experiments and several phenomena are found.The space charges exist within the cable insulation under 50 Hz power frequency voltage. In both two experiments, the space charges, which changes periodically and follows the AC phase,appear instantly after the AC voltage is applied.In the second experiment, the steady charge, which do not change with the AC phase, is accumulated gradually within the cable insulation under long-time aging process. The changing curve of the total space charge with AC phases is plotted in the first experiment. It is found that the total charges when AC voltage declines are more than those when AC voltage rises; and the charges in 0° is more than those in 180°. This phenomenon indicates that the charge recombination lags behind the AC voltage declining, which indirectly certifies the existence of the space charge under AC voltage.
