A new indirect rotor position estimation method for 12/8 switched reluctance motor (SRM) is presented in this paper. In this method, searching coils are wounded on stator teeth together with main coils. The structure of searching coils is able to reduce the induced voltages caused by main coils. Parameter design of it is also discussed. By applying high frequency voltage to searching coils, the rotor position can be derived from induced sample voltage signals. Searching coils are isolated from main coils, thus high frequency signal can be injected from standstill to high speed. Therefore, the proposed method can operate in a wide speed range. The method is implemented on a 12/8 SRM. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate the validity of this method.
