Decomposition of Styrene by Streamer Discharge with Array Electrode

Abstract  For the evaluation of VOCs control method of pre-treat by discharge to aerosols, and then electrostatic collection, a streamer discharge system with array electrode was built for styrene treatment. The discharge characteristics, energy efficiency of styrene decomposition, by-product control, and aerosols produced were studied by voltage-current curve, ozone produced, and styrene removal. The results show that, based on the array electrode, stable streamer is generated by DC discharge. It is found that a positive correlation between ozone production, as well as styrene decomposition and special input energy. For positive discharge, the energy efficiency is higher than that of negative discharge. For the positive streamer with pine-plate distance of 20mm, the energy efficiency of ozone production and styrene decomposition is about 0.55mol/(100eV) and 0.45mol/(100eV), respectively. The oily aerosols with color of russet are produced when the styrene is treated by streamer. The results from XPS analysis indicate that the aerosols mainly consist of C-C and/or C-H, and the content of these two functional groups is about 82.52%, but the advanced oxidation products such as -COOR and -COOH are negligible.
