Abstract:Sub-module (SM) fault is a common fault type of modular multilevel converters (MMC). MMC will run under an asymmetrical state when SM was insulated. In order to maintain the stable operation of the MMC system, this paper presents a sub-module fault tolerant optimal control strategy of MMC based on estimation of bridge energy. The capacitor voltage of sub-module at each time is obtained by a dynamic prediction of the energy stored in the arm. Without the additional circulation suppression controllers, the asymmetric fundamental harmonic and the second harmonic current are suppressed. The proposed strategy simplifies the complexity of the controller, which is applicable to both the asymmetrical operating state and the normal operating state. Finally, the correctness of the proposed strategy is verified by the electromagnetic transient simulation results based on Xiamen HVDC project.
