Abstract:Since the traditional current differential protection for high voltage direct current (HVDC) is significantly influenced by distributed capacitance and of poor reliability, a novel pilot protection algorithm based on calculated resistance is proposed. The calculated resistance is calculated by using the dc component of fault component at both terminals of the line. When internal faults occur, the calculated resistance is relatively low; when external faults occur, the calculated resistance is very high. Upon the basis of that, faulted pole can be identified by the calculated power accurately. The proposed scheme is insensitive to the sampling frequency and independent of distributed capacitive current. Meanwhile, the setting principle can be set in a simple and clear way. Theoretical analysis and comprehensive simulation experiments showed that it operates with high reliability and selectivity under different fault conditions with high fault resistance. In addition, its validity has been verified by real time digital simulator (RTDS) and field data test.
