A new design concept is proposed for flux weakening operation in permanent magnet synchronous motor(PMSM). A pair of shunt-tooth are embedded in each slot of the stator,which can reduce magnet circuit reluctance and increase the flux produced by less armature magnetometive force. More armature flux mainly circulating in shunt-tooth will counteract permanent magnet excitation flux enwinding stator winding,control stator winding flux linkage,and rise speed by flux weakening. Based on equivalent magnet circuit,the flux weakening principle of shunt-tooth was firstly introduced,and then the reason that torque output is not affected by shunt-tooth was explained. The new stator design has been studied by finite element analysis(FEA). Based on previous analysis, a prototype motor is manufactured and experimented. The testing results are corresponding to the calculation results, which could verify flux weakening capacity of the new design concept.
