Abstract:The precision location of partial discharge (PD) in power cable is of great significance to the reliability of the urban power grid. However, the location accuracy of the traditional phase difference method is greatly influenced by noise and the frequency-dependent characteristic of phase velocity. Thus, this paper presents a new improved phase difference method to locate partial discharge source. This method takes into account the effect of phase velocity frequency change and the distribution characteristics of the PD frequency band, so it has good anti-noise capability. Firstly, the basic principle of the proposed method is introduced. To locate the PD source, the frequency range of PD signal is utilized to unwrap the phase difference. After that, the phase difference is modified by phase velocity. Then, simulations in Matlab prove the effectiveness of the proposed method. Finally, the PD source of a 250m defective power cable is located. It is shown that the proposed method has high location accuracy and can obtain better results in practical test.
