Abstract:A novel system of solar LED street lamp lighting was developed. Based on the characteristics of solar cell, storage battery and high power LED, the charging and discharging circuits were designed, respectively. To reduce the power loss, a synchronous Buck topology is applied to the charger, and a chip IR2103 is applied to effectively drive the two switches of the synchronous Buck converter. To achieve the maximum luminescent efficiency of LED, a constant current control technique is used for the discharging circuit. ATMEGA16 is used to control the charging and discharging process; and it is also used to communicate with the host computer for system debugging and maintenance. A new maximum power point tracking (MPPT) method is proposed. This method is implemented by tracking the maximum storage battery charging current from solar cell. According to the storage battery condition, the MPPT charging, constant voltage charging, and floating charging were applied to the charger, respectively. The long-term test results show that the developed system works stably, and the charging, discharging and the data communication status are correct. The charging efficiency is about 86%. The contrast test results validate the proposed MPPT method.
