Numerical Simulation and Control Method of Electromagnetic-Permanent Composite Contactor

Abstract  In order to solve the problem that the permanent magnet contactor does not have the failure safety mode, an electromagnetic-permanent magnet composite contactor structure is designed. Due to the low simulation efficiency and low precision in the existing structure, an integrated electromagnetic simulation framework is proposed. In the electromagnetic-permanent magnet structure, the magnetic field distribution and the mechanical motion are solved by coupling the electric, magnetic, and mechanical governing equations. The electromagnetic variables and mechanical variables can be solved in the same discrete time period without additional lookup table and interpolations, which gives much higher calculation efficiency than the existing method. According to the simulation calculations, the electromagnetic-permanent magnet composite contactor control circuit and control logic with failure-safe mode are designed. The experimental test results show that the contactor can be successfully disconnected, entering the safety mode under the failure mode or the sloshing condition. Compared with traditional electromagnetic contactor, the proposed electromagnetic-permanent magnet composite mechanism is capable to save energy consumption over 90%.
