Abstract  The magnetic transmission actuator realizes energy conversion through the non-contact magnetic coupling. It exhibits some distinct advantages, such as free contact mechanism, overload protection, high reliability, and low vibration. Therefore, the linear actuators adopt permanent magnet magnetic transmission technology, which combines high thrust force density and high reliability. This paper expounds the characteristics of the high force density permanent magnet linear actuators. Besides, several typical magnetic actuators are reviewed, and the concept of the high-performance magnetic screw and operation principle are introduced. In addition, the research work of domestic and abroad scholars in the field of magnetic screw is overviewed and summarized, and the key research issues, such as topology and manufacturing are analyzed. Moreover, some potentials applications of the magnetic screws are discussed, such as in aerospace and rail transit. Finally, the research trends are prospected.
