Abstract Perfluoroisobutyronitrile(C₄F₇N) and its gas mixtures are new environmental-friendly insulating medium that have received extensive attention in recent years and may replace sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆). In this paper ,in order to explore the potential of C₄F₇N/CO₂ gas mixtures applied to highpressureelectrical equipment,the power frequency breakdown characteristics of C₄F₇N/CO₂ gas mixtures at different mixing ratios and pressures were studied and compared with SF6 under the same conditionsthrough the gas insulated test platform and the mixing ratio range of C4F7N/CO₂ gas mixtures applied in engineering practice was discussed in combination with the saturated vapor pressure characteristics. The results show that the breakdownvoltages of C₄F₇N/CO₂ gas mixtures show saturated growth trend with the increase of pressure and mixing ratio in the experimental interval. The C₄F₇N/CO₂ gas mixtures with C₄F₇N content of 10% and 20% can reach 80% and more than 95% of the SF6 insulation level under the same conditions, respectively, and there is a synergistic effect between C4F7N and CO₂ gas. Considering factors such as power frequency breakdown strength and liquefaction temperature, the gas mixtures with C₄F₇N content of 4% to 12% have the potential to be applied to highpressure（0.4MPa~0.6MPa）gasinsulated equipment.
