Abstract This paper amends the existing capacitor driven railgun model and brings in rail inductance. The results after amendment are compared to Simplorer simulation results, demonstrating that the amendment improves the computing accuracy in the premise of computing stability. Based on the amended model and an existing triggering strategy, this paper proposed a new one which can control the muzzle velocity. Thereafter the feasibility is analyzed and steps are explained. Results after calculation are compared to target muzzle velocities to prove the effect of this controlling method. These results show that, when target muzzle velocity is between 1.5~2km/s, the relative error between the theoretical velocity obtained through this strategy and the target velocity can be controlled within 1%.
