Study on Aging Characteristics of Silicone Rubber Sheds of Composite Insulators Based on Conduction Current Test

Abstract  Taking being operated composite insulators as the object, the aging characteristics of composite insulators based on conduction current test is assessed. Electrical degradation threshold was got by the conduction current test, the influence of aging factors on electrical degradation threshold of the silicone rubber sheds such as shed locations, operating years, environment contamination levels and operating voltage levels were considered, and the changes of relevant groups of samples were studied with the Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FTIR) method. It is founded that the electrical degradation threshold of samples are lower, conduction current are larger and trap is more under the following situations: samples from the location where the electric field of the insulator string is higher; and samples from the insulators with a longer operation life or working in seriously polluted areas. The operation voltage almost has no influence on the aging state of insulators. Evaluating the sheds aging state by using the electric degradation threshold and FTIR analysis have high consistency, and indicates that electrical degradation threshold which got by the conduction current test can reflect the aging characteristics of silicone rubber sheds of composite insulators.
