Abstract Permanent magnet flux switching machine(PMFSM) is novel double salient reluctance machine with magnets housed in stator, which features low copper loss and high efficiency. The cogging torque in PMFSM is critical due to the unique configuration of stator- and rotor-pole and double salient structure. This paper aims to demonstrate the principle and characters of the cogging torque in PMFSM, which is different from the traditional PM machine. The analytical methodology for analyzing the cogging torque in PMFSM is developed, which is used to derive the analytical expressions directly related to the design parameters. The analytical model of the PMFSM obtained give significant reference to the practical process of the machine design.
