Abstract  The parameters of E0/U and saliency ratio ρ are crucial for the design and efficiency improvement of permanent magnet synchronous reluctance motor (PMSRM).Firstly, the relationship between power factor and saliency ratio under different E0/U states is deduced.Secondly, the distributions of current, copper loss and core loss on the ρ -E0/U coordinate plane are calculated, and the minimum loss area is obtained. The “palm” design principle of PMSRM applied in high-efficiency motor is proposed. Finally,a 5.5kW prototype was designed and manufactured. The efficiency of the prototype reached IE5,and the consumption of permanent magnet of the PMSRM was 30% less than that of the conventional permanent magnet synchronous motor, which verified the design principle.
