Abstract  This paper establishes a model to evaluate the influence on local electric field caused by five common foreign matters on the surface of 252kV GIS basin insulator, such as metal scraps, hair, paper scraps, silicone grease and sand. Later, a series of simulations have been carried out using three-dimensional finite element analysis software. An insulation test platform was built in order to verify the validity of results of the theoretical analysis. On this test platform, lightning impulse, power frequency withstand voltage and partial discharge tests were carried out under different positions (high, medium and low potential areas) and different arrangements (linear, scattered) of foreign matters adhered to the surface of basin insulator. The experimental results illustrate that when the small size of a single metal scrap adheres to the insulator convex high potential area, it does not cause the breakdown phenomenon. When the metal scraps are in the low potential area of convex of insulator, the linear arrangement of the metal scraps is more likely to cause insulation breakdown. Four types of non-metallic foreign matters have less influence on the insulation property of the insulators. The measured discharge capacity of the sand is significantly higher than other three types of non-metallic foreign matters, which indicates that the possibility of insulation fault will increase significantly after the long-term induced accumulation of sand-type foreign matters.
