Minimum Reflux Power Strategy of Three-Level Dual Active Bridge DC-DC Converter with Phase Shift Control

Abstract  Three-level dual active bridge (3L-DAB) DC-DC converter adds another control degree of freedom by introducing the 3L legs into DAB converters, which will enhance the regulating flexibility. 3L-DAB under phase shift control will produce large reflux power, resulting in high power loss and low system efficiency. For this problem, this paper proposes a phase shift control strategy with minimum reflux power. The mathematical models of reflux power and transmission power of 3L-DAB are established, and the relationship equations among the minimum reflux power, phase shift ratios and voltage conversion ratio are deduced. The minimum reflux power and the corresponding optimal phase shift ratio are calculated by using the segmentation optimization algorithm in different ranges of transmission power and voltage conversion ratio. Comparative analysis of reflux power between the optimal and conventional phase shift controls has been carried out. The proposed strategy can minimize the reflux power, reduce the inductor current stress and improve the system efficiency in a wider voltage conversion ratio. An experimental prototype was developed based on the proposed strategy, and the experimental results verify the effectiveness of the minimum reflux power switching strategy and the correctness of the theoretical analysis.
