Abstract

The current models for transient short-circuit current of doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) wind turbine do not consider impacts of converter current limiter and grid side converter (GSC) current. Firstly, a total transient short-circuits current analytical expression of DFIG including stator current and GSC current was deduced, considering the aforementioned impacts. Based on the proposed current calculation model, a rotor peak current estimation formula was given through analysis of rotor transient current vector trajectory, to quantify the boundary conditions between two possible states under voltage sags, which are rotor connected to the crowbar protection circuit and rotor excited by the convertor. Finally, the largest DFIG steady-state fault current and its appear condition estimation formulas were obtained, which are of universal significance. The accuracy of theoretical analysis and mathematical model were verified by compared with simulation tests and field measurement data. The conclusions can provide a theoretical reference for optimizing the control strategy and generator parameters for low voltage ride through, and provide the basis for the capacity checking of switches and breakers associated with wind farms.
