Fretting Contact Characteristics of Precious Metal-Plating Materials Used in Electrical Connectors

Abstract  The effect of precious metal platings Au, PdNi alloy and flash Au on PdNi alloy on the fretting elecrical contact performance is investigated. The condition of different platings metal, normal contact forces, environmental temperature and lubricant on variations of contact resistance were studied respectively based on the fretting contact resistance testing system. Fretting characteristic parameters, such as lifetime, fretting contact resistance formula, fretting wear coefficient are accessed and calculated. Au plating behaves the optimal fretting performance, followed by flash Au+ PdNi, and the worst is PdNi plating. Reducing contact forces is an effective method to improve the contact performance.
