Wind Power Accommodation Based on Block Price

Abstract  The more and more trans-provincial transmission of large-scale wind power challenges the power system at the receiving-end of the transmission line with peak-load regulation. And this has significantly affected the wind power accommodation. In this paper, a new method for wind power accommodation based on block prices was proposed minimizing the cost of power purchase paid by power system operators. The marginal cost benefits of the thermal unit and pumped-storage hydro (PSH) was considered and the block pricing mechanism of the wind power is investigated to help wind power accommodation. The profits made by different participants such as grid company, wind power enterprise, thermal unit and PSH are balanced through the proposed pricing mechanism and the wind power accommodation can be increased. It was proved theoretically in this paper that the proposed method is equivalent to wind curtailment penalty. Finally, simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness. Results show that this method could help to reduce the wind curtailment significantly so that the profit of wind power enterprise can be increased. The thermal unit and PSH will more actively participate in the system regulation and the profit of transmission system operator will not be affected.
