Abstract  For a simplified equivalent sending system with multiple thermal power units and multiple DC transmissions in Ningxia power grid, the complex torque coefficient method is employed based on the complex frequency domain port-equivalence conductance matrix (CPCM) to analyze the damping characteristics of generation units. It is observed that reducing the DC power level or improving the ac system strength of the sending end and strengthening the electrical coupling between dc systems contribute to damping improvement of the system subsynchronous oscillation (SSO). In addition, a subsynchronous damping controller (SSDC) designed is intended to reduce the SSO risk of the turbine-generators in Ningxia power grid. Simulations are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the controller. The research is expected to provide the technical support and guidance for the operation, planning and SSO mitigation of Ningxia power grid.
