Abstract  Current harmonics in grid side of pulse width modulation (PWM) rectifiers are usually high during light load. Aiming at this phenomenon, causes of the harmonics are analyzed in detail. This paper points out that dead time effect, harmonics of drive signals and harmonics of the grid voltage are the main reasons that leads distortions in grid current, and the computing methods of the harmonics are given accordingly. Because the grid side current harmonics have complicated components and are difficult to be compensated accurately, a new method with adaptive cosine internal model controllers to suppress grid side current harmonics is proposed. Then the low order harmonics (5th, 7th, 11th, 13th, 17th and 19th) are suppressed effectively, and the influence on stability of the system decreases. Finally, simulations and experiments verify the correctness of analysis and rationality of control method.
