Abstract

This paper aims to provide design concepts of axial flux permanent magnet(AFPM) machines in specific situations. Due to the unique profile constraints, some dimensions such as magnet radial length and axial thickness, as well as stator tooth tip thickness are parametrically investigated. Three unique configurations of AFPM machine are proposed, including the axial flux internal rotor (AFIR) machine with single rotor sandwiched between two stators, and the TORUS-NN and the TORUS-NS machines with single stator sandwiched between two rotors. Electromagnetic performance as well as stator vibration modes are compared. Both theoretical analysis and three-dimensional(3-D) finite element analysis (FEA) are made to verify the optimization.
