Abstract The Z-source DC circuit breaker（ZSCB), which consists of a thyristor and a Z-source impedance network, can automatically interrupt faults without requiring additional real-time current detection units. It offers advantages such as simple control, low conduction losses, and cost-effectiveness. Close-open（CO）is a fundamental functionality required for circuit breakers according to the IEC-62271-100 standard. However, the existing ZSCB topologies lack CO functionality because the initial capacitor voltage changes after each fault interruption, rendering them unable to address permanent faults. Previous studies have proposed two CO methods using pre-charging and fault energy harvesting. However, these approaches lack theoretical analysis of the reclosing process and generally suffer from long durations, high losses, and poor reliability.
After analyzing the reclosing process of the ZSCB, this paper proposes a novel CO method based on topology shifting for a coupled-inductor-based ZSCB to provide continuous, efficient, and reliable CO functionality. Firstly, the reclosing process of two typical coupled-inductor-based ZSCBs is theoretically analyzed. The s-domain circuit models of the two topologies are established, and the threshold values of their initial capacitor voltage required to achieve CO functionality are derived through the initial-value theorem. The equivalence and duality of these two topologies are also demonstrated, and the concept of topology shifting is introduced. Secondly, a novel CO method based on topology shifting（TS-CO）is proposed, and a TQ-ZSCB topology is designed. The operating modes, parameter design, and control circuit design are analyzed. Finally, simulations and prototype experiments are conducted to verify the feasibility and advantages of the proposed method.
The following conclusions can be drawn.（1）Compared with existing CO methods that rely on external pre-charging and energy harvesting circuits, the proposed TS-CO method leverages the intrinsic characteristics of ZSCBs, allowing the capacitor's initial voltage to automatically meet the required threshold for CO without being influenced by the load. This approach enables continuous, stable CO operation under permanent fault conditions with high reliability.（2）By appropriately designing the driving pulse width of the thyristor, the proposed method can distinguish between normal and fault conditions at the reclosing moment and take corresponding actions.（3）The proposed method demonstrates low conduction loss, minimal device overvoltage, and cost-effectiveness.
