DC Breakdown Characteristics of C3F7CN/N2 Gas Mixtures

Abstract：In recent years, finding environment-friendly gases substituted to SF6 in DC GIL has become a hot issue in the electricity field, and C3F7CN is one of the potential substitutes. In this paper, the DC breakdown characteristics of C3F7CN/N2 gas mixtures under uniform electric field were studied and the results were compared with SF6, SF6/N2 gas mixtures and C3F7CN/CO2 gas mixtures. The content of C3F7CN was 8%~16% with the gas pressure range from 0.3MPa to 0.7MPa. The results and analysis showed that the positive and negative DC breakdown field strengths of C3F7CN/N2 gas mixture decrease with the decrease of gas pressure. With the increase of C3F7CN content in the mixed gas by 20%, the negative breakdown field strength of 14% C3F7CN/86%N2 at 0.7MPa reaches 87.3% of SF6 at 0.4MPa. At the same gas pressure, the DC breakdown field strength of 8%C3F7CN/92%N2 gas mixture is the lowest, 8%C3F7CN/92%CO2 is higher, and 20%SF6/80% N2 is the highest. Through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) detection, the discharge by-products on the electrodes surface were analyzed and the possible reactions process between C3F7CN/N2 gas mixture and electrodes were obtained.
