Abstract The electrical performance of polluted insulator string may reduce under low air pressure, whereas no reasonable answer about how air presssure effects on DC pollution flashover performance of insulator string is put forward by now. The paper experimental researches on the DC pollution flashover characteristics of seven units of XP-160 and short sample of compostie insulator to be used in UHV transmission lines. It is shown that the exponent n describing the air pressure influence on DC pollution flashover voltage depends on the characteristic of partial arc by the analysis in theory and the main reason that makes the n of insulators different is the partial arc fluttering degree difference for insulators.
