A Real-Time Digital Simulation Model and Its Implementation for Arc Furnace Based on Recorded Field Data

Abstract：Based on the recorded field data, a method to model an arc furnace for real-time simulation is presented in this paper. The model simulates the arc furnace to a current source controlled by the field data. Adopting a phase locked technique, the synchronization between simulation and field data is performed, and it made a long time real-time simulation possible. Besides, the real time digital simulators (RTDS) implementation according to a real arc furnace distribution supply system is described in the paper, which is used to test the real control and protect devices of static var compensator (SVC) system. The simulation and test results indicate that the modeling is feasible and valid, which can fully and factually reoccur the power quality problems produced by arc furnace, such as voltage fluctuation and flicker, harmonics and unbalances, and the test system based on RTDS can be used for close loop testing of SVC controller.
