Abstract:This paper presents a research on air-gap magnetic field distribution and mutual inductance asymmetry phenomenon of the sectionally powered AC linear motor. With consideration of the harmonic magnetic field, the paper deduces the analytical expressions of the distribution of the air-gap magnetic field and the self- and mutual- inductance of the motor. Additionally, the paper verifies the correctness of the analytical expressions with help of the finite element simulation. The analysis shows that, the existence of the unexcited primary induces an additional off-set pulsating component in the air-gap flux density of the motor with common winding type, which results in the mutual inductance asymmetry, and the degree of the asymmetry lies of the length of the unpowered primary and that of the powered section. As to the motor with new winding type, the mutual inductance asymmetry results from the asymmetry of the arrangement of the winding, and the degree of the asymmetry only lies on the poles of the powered section, has nothing to do with the unpowered section. And compared with the motor with common winding type, the motor with the new winding type could apparently reduce the degree of the mutual inductance asymmetry.
