Abstract:In this paper, the vibration and acoustic noise in a novel variable flux reluctance machine(VFRM), which is similar to a switched reluctance machine(SRM) but employs 3-phase bipolar inverter fed sinusoidal currents and stator located DC coils for field excitation, are investigated by the electromagnetic/mechanical finite element analyses and experiments. Comparative study between VFRM and SRM shows significant reduction of vibration in VFRM as a result of reduced vibration force around the natural frequency of vibration mode 2. The test results on the prototype VFRM and SRM with the same outer diameter and stack length confirm the benefits of VFRM in terms of vibration and acoustic noise, with sound pressure level reduced by ~4dBA and ~8dBA without/with load, respectively.
