Abstract:The power supply for LED requires high power density in addition to high efficiency and high power factor. The size of electrolytic capacitor used as storage capacitor is usually large, which hampers the improvement on the power density. In order to improve the power density, it is necessary to reduce storage capacitance and then reduce the size of the power supply. In this paper the relationship among the input power factor, input power and storage capacitance is analyzed. The proposed method of injecting 3rd harmonic into the input current can reduce the storage capacitance to 65.6%, and reduce 20% volume of the storage capacitor, while the input power factor is not less than 0.9 and the output voltage ripples remain the same. A prototype of a 60W Boost PFC converter has been built and the experimental results are presented.
