Abstract  To fully utilize the regenerative braking energy generated by AC-DC-AC electric locomotives and economically improve the power quality of the V/v traction system, a hybrid railway power conditioner based on energy storage system (ESS-HRPC) is proposed in this paper. The ESS is connected to the DC side of the RPC via a bidirectional DC-DC converter for recycling and utilizing the surplus regenerative braking energy. A set of thyristor-switched capacitors (TSCs) and a set of thyristor-controlled reactors (TCRs) are used to assist the RPC in providing reactive power, so that the cost for the negative sequence current compensation can be reduced. Firstly, the structure and basic principle of the ESS-HRPC are analyzed, the equipment capacity ratio of the TCRs, TSCs and RPC is studied, the capacity of the RPC for reactive power compensation is analyzed, and the relationship of voltage, current and power is derived. Then, the reference signals and control strategy of each component in the ESS-HRPC are designed. Finally, the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed ESS-HRPC and its control strategy are verified by three system simulations.
