Abstract Linear induction machines (LIMs) have become excellent candidates for linear-motion applications due to their abilities of generating thrust without any transmissions, and have been widely adopted in transportation, military, industries, etc. However, the LIMs suffer from low efficiency due to the cut-open magnetic circuit, half-filled slots, and large air-gap length. Efficiency optimization control (EOC) techniques are mostly required to improve the machine efficiency by using a proper flux level. This paper summarizes the advancements of EOC techniques for LIMs based on literature survey, then analyzes main challenges to the EOC applications, and finally discusses the developing trends of EOC for LIMs.
