Abstract  In this paper, a novel spoke-array vernier permanent magnet (SA-VPM) machine with consequent-pole magnets and flux bridges is proposed to improve the torque density of the SA-VPM machine with high pole ratio (ratio of rotor pole pair number to winding pole pair number). In the proposed SA-VPM machine, the magnets with circumferential magnetization have the same polarity and the flux bridges are attached to the side-faces of rotor permanent magnets (PMs), which can weaken the flux barrier effect and strengthen the flux modulation effect, thus improving the air-gap flux density, back-EMF and torque density. Moreover, the proposed SA-VPM machine can save the usage of PMs due to the consequent-pole structure. The flux barrier effect, configuration and operational principles of the proposed SA-VPM machine are introduced. Then, the influences of several main parameters on torque performance are researched. Finally, the electromagnetic performances of the conventional and proposed SA-VPM machines are compared by finite element analysis (FEA). The results prove that the proposed machine has higher torque density and lower PM usage.
