Abstract The basin-type insulators are key component in the gas insulated switchgear (GIS). However, many surface flashover accidents occurred during the operation of the basin-type insulators, threaten the safe operation of power grid. The insulation performance of the basin-type insulators depend on the properties of the castable epoxy resin (EP) composite materials. In this paper, methyl tetrahydrophthalic anhydride (Me-THPA) was used to extend the molecular chain of low molecular weight epoxy resin, the molecular weight distribution and curing characteristics of the chain-extended epoxy resin were investigated. On the basis, the chain-extended epoxy resin/Al₂O₃ composite materials were prepared, and the breakdown characteristics and surface flashover characteristics of the composite material cured products were tested. The results showed that Me-THPA had achieved the purpose of chain extension of the low molecular weight epoxy resin, the heat release during curing of the chain-extended epoxy resins was reduced. In addition, the breakdown voltage and the surface flashover voltage of chain-extended epoxy resin/Al₂O₃ cured products had improved. It was hoped that the research results could provide reference for the improvement of the insulation capability of the basin-type insulators.
