Abstract In recent years, environmental-friendly insulating medium C₄F₇N/CO₂ gas mixture have received extensive attention due to its excellent dielectric strength. In order to mitigate carbon creation after high-energy discharge, it is necessary to add O₂ as the second buffer gas. However, there are few reports on the discharge decomposition characteristics of C₄F₇N/CO₂/O₂ gas mixture. In this paper, a series of AC breakdown discharge experiments were carried out and the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to analyze the discharge decomposition characteristics of C₄F₇N/CO₂/O₂ gas mixture with different O₂ volume fractions. It is found that the main decomposition products of C₄F₇N/CO₂/O₂ gas mixture after multiple breakdowns are CF₄, C₂F₆, C₃F₈, CF₃CN, C₂F₅CN, C₃F₆, CO, COF₂, C₂N₂, etc., and the production content of CF₄, CO and C₂F₆ is relatively higher. When the O₂ volume fraction increases from 0% to 2%, the content of the decomposition products mentioned above will decrease to some extent;as the O₂ volume fraction further increases, the content of CF₄ and CO will continue decreasing, and the content of COF₂ produced will increase, while the content of the other products mentioned above will not change significantly.
