Abstract  Today’s wireless charging for movable handy terminals like mobile phones utilizes a charging pad on which the terminals must be placed horizontally. This working mode cannot meet the requirement of charging while working. Given that variousdevices need to work in upright mode, a novel wireless power transfer (WPT) system based on vertical repeater was proposed. An L-shaped charging base in which the lateral transmitter and the repeater on the base cooperate to charge devices at any angle on and in vicinity of the base, was designed. Analysis of the equivalent circuit model was conducted and expressions of transmission power and efficiency were obtained. Transmission characteristics at three typical positions of the receiver were studied through simulation and verified by experiments. The relative position of repeater to the transmitterwas optimized through simulation and the experimental results show that the efficiency can achieve a improvement up to 6%.
