Abstract  Current transformer (CT) saturation will lead to the failure to operate for traditional power frequency variation protection when a fault occurs on line, in order to solve this problem, this paper analyzes the relationship between the frequency variation protection working voltage and system impedance, fault current variation and effect of current transformer saturation on power frequency variation protection operation characteristics, and a novel scheme based on the system maximum and minimum setting impedance power frequency variation protection scheme resisting CT saturation is proposed. Theoretical analysis and PSCAD based simulation verification show that the algorithm can not only maintain the operation performance of the original power frequency variation, but also can act accurately operate under CT saturation.
