Abstract To address the issue that existing studies cannot take time and spatial varying travel demand of vehicles into consideration, this paper proposed an optimal planning technique for electric vehicle charging stations on the highway network based on dynamic traffic simulation. First, the dynamic traffic simulation method was proposed based on link transmission model to simulate the time and spatial traffic flow distribution on the highway network and calculate electric vehicle arrival rates of charging stations. Then, M/M/S queuing model was adopted to calculate electric vehicle charging waiting time. Further, considering the charging need and charging availability of electric vehicles and distribution network capacity constraints, the multi-objective highway network electric vehicle charging station planning model was proposed, with the aim of minimizing daily charging waiting time and annual construction and maintenance cost. The multi-objective particle swarm algorithm and VIKOR method was used to solve the model and determine the optimal planning scheme. Finally, the practicability and validity of the method in this paper was verified through a looped highway network test case.
