Abstract In this paper, based on the mathematical model of the three-phase permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (PMLSM) in the synchronous rotating coordinate system, the three-order state equation of the system was derived, and the rotor speed estimation based on the extended Kalman filter (EKF) was realized, firstly. Then, the calculation process of the traditional EKF showed that the real-time linear Taylor approximation was completed at the best state estimation of the last period, with a certain delay. Accordingly, the low-order serial dual extended Kalman filters (LSDEKFs) algorithm was proposed, which consisted of two low-order EKFs operating in series. The Taylor approximation was realized at the best estimation of the current cycle to improve the accuracy of state estimation. Finally, the simulation and experimental results show that the speed sensorless control strategy based on LSDEKFs has higher accuracy in speed estimation compared with the conventional EKF.
