Abstract  There are power quality problems in the V/v traction substation, such as poor power factor, bad harmonic pollution, and large negative sequence current, and so on. Taking advantages of active and passive compensators, this paper proposed a low-cost hybrid dynamic integrated compensation system constituted by a multiple back-to-back bidirectional converter and classical asymmetric passive compensation filters. The positive and negative effects of the passive filter on active components capacity were analyzed. The asymmetric compensation principle and capacity design method were studied. The total cost of device was reduced effectively. The comparisons of the power quality parameters were carried out before and after the proposed system is put into operation, which proves the proposed system.
