Abstract The three-phase sudden short circuit fault is one of the most serious faults of turbogenerators. The rotor may be shocked by the electromagnetic force and even the mechanical-fatigue rotor’s outside surface may have cracks because of the fault. Therefore, it is an important premise of the turbogenerator’s rotor optimization design to know the distribution of the rotor electromagnetic force and the location in which the electromagnetic force concentration appears. In this paper, the field-circuit coupled simulation model of the three-phase sudden short circuit fault of the turbogenerator is firstly established. Secondly, a 600 MW turbogenerator is taken as an example, and its three-phase sudden short circuit process is calculated. Finally, the distribution and the dynamic change of the electromagnetic force on the top and side walls of the rotor teeth are obtained and compared with those in the rated condition. The position of the electromagnetic force is found. The study in this paper provides the basis of the optimization design of the turbogenerator rotor structure.
