Abstract  The equivalent circuit model of the vehicle magnetorheological (MR) bumper is set up based on its impedance behavior and the time response requirement of the magnetic-excitation current source.The time expression of the changing coil current is obtained.The measures to reduce the response time of the MR bumper are then analyzed.A two-stage converter composed of a traditional isolated converter and a non-isolated one is proposed.The transfer function between the front and the back circuit is analyzed in theory.And the parameters of the circuit are selected reasonably.The actual circuit system is then fabricated.The dynamic response time of the circuit is tested.The results of the experiments indicate that,when driving the MR bumper load with equivalent 39.6 mH inductance and 11.7Ohm resistance,the circuit is controllable,the output current can be continuously ranged from 0 to 3 A,the response time of the activation is less than 5 milliseconds,and the response time is about 10 milliseconds,which satisfy the design requirement.
