Abstract Homogeneity is a basic state property of matters. A homogeneity analysis and evaluation method on power system operation security and power asset utilization is proposed. Causes of power system inhomogeneity are first analyzed, and the relationship among power system homogeneity, economy and security is researched. After that, the importance of homogeneity through grid programming, operation and management are revealed. Then, for the considerations of system operation states and security margins, degrees of power system state homogeneity and inherent homogeneity are defined respectively. Finally, for the difficulties in direct solution of the inherent homogeneity index proposed, an optimization model using equipment load rate constraint parameters δ_U, and δ_L is defined and solved. Case study on IEEE 30-bus test system shows that homogeneity analysis and evaluation have positive reference significance to power system programming, operation and management, and can be complement and perfection to evaluation system of smart grids.
