Abstract  The arc characteristics of laser triggered vacuum switches (LTVS) are affected by the circuit parameters and target materials, influencing the current interruption performances. With the established circuit based on detachable vacuum chamber, the differences of repeated current interruption time of LTVS under various current frequencies, operating voltages, current amplitudes, electrode structures and target materials are compared in this paper. The effects of different arc parameters on LTVS’s repeated current interruption performances are analyzed. The interaction of vacuum arc with target materials during current interruption process is discussed. The test results prove that, interruption time of LTVS increases with the increase of voltage amplitude and current, and decreases with the increase of current frequency. The effect of axial magnetic field (AMF) electrode on interruption capacity of LTVS changes with current frequency, and the interruption performance is obviously affected by the target materials. Among NaCl, KCl, TiH2 and Ti+KCl, LTVS with Ti+KCl, which has the best thermal conductivity, shows the worst interruption performance, and its interruption time is 7ms for 2.6kA current with 1.4kHz repeated frequency. This paper provides a reference for LTVS product design.
