Abstract  An accurate analytical model is proposed to calculate the rotor eddy current losses resulted from the slotting effect in high speed permanent magnet (PM) machines. The analytical model accounts for five subdomains including slot and slot-opening. By establishing and solving the vector potential equations in different subdomains and considering boundary conditions between subdomains, the analytical model can be derived with account of the eddy current reaction in retaining sleeve and PM. Based on the analytical model, eddy current loss in retaining sleeve and PM can be calculated. The influence of slot-opening to slot-pitch ratio, retaining sleeve materials and retaining sleeve thickness on rotor eddy current losses is investigated. Comparing with the results calculated by finite element method (FEM) and test, it validates that the analytical model is correct.
