Experiment of AC Corona Current Pulses When Adjacent to DC Conductor

Abstract  In this paper, a parallel AC-DC conductor corona discharge platform was built to investigate the characteristics of AC corona current pulses produced by single discharge point under the influence of adjacent DC voltages. The distribution pattern, repetition frequency and waveform parameters of the AC corona current pulses were systematically analyzed. Experimental results show that the adjacent positive DC voltage has a respective promotion and inhabitation effect on the AC corona discharge corresponding to the negative and positive half cycles, and vice versa for the adjacent negative DC voltage. No obvious effects were observed on the waveform of negative half circle corona current pulses. While for the positive half cycles, the corona current pulse amplitude increases slightly with the adjacent negative DC voltage. Furthermore, it was found that the adjacent negative DC voltage to promote the existence of positive half circle corona discharge becomes higher with the increase of AC voltage, and it was explained as the lack of seed electrons based on the calculation of ionization intensity. Finally, the assumption that the electric field in the ionization zone in the development of corona is constant was proposed to interpret the almost no effects of adjacent DC voltages on the parameters of the AC corona current pulse waveform.
