Array Integrated Inductor with Unit Coupling and Matrix Combination Used in Multiphase Voltage Regulator Module |

Abstract Integrated inductor has important effects on steady-state and dynamic characteristics of multiphase voltage regulator module (VRM). Reasonable coupling degree can improve the output dynamic response of VRM and reduce the steady-state ripple of each channel. An array integrated inductor with a small inductor unit for matrix combining was proposed, and its inductance integration principle was analyzed. The unit position topology and unit combination topology of the array integrated inductors were designed. Regarding the self-inductance and mutual-inductance units, this paper also analyzed the relationship of coupling degree of the coupled inductors with the turn ratio and magneto resistive ratio. Expressions of equivalent steady-state inductance and transient inductance of multiphase VRM coupled inductors were derived using circuit equations, and the coupling degree design criteria of multiphase VRM integrated inductors were obtained. The comparisons show that the coupling degree of the proposed array integrated inductors is in complete accordance with the design criteria. Four-phase array integrated inductor was designed using the design criteria put forward in this paper. The test results of the experimental prototype verified the design criteria. Moreover, the experimental prototype was applied in four-phase VRM, and the experimental results show that VRM using array integrated magnetic inductors has well steady-state and dynamic characteristics. The practicality of the array integrated inductor was verified.
